03-22-2022, 06:35 PM. I was watching a video on youtube the other day where it was recommended a 1:1 mixture of perlite and vermiculite for rooting fig cuttings. Considering that in the past I have messed up some cuttings using peat moss (too much water), this seems like a reasonable idea, but I wanted to hear your comments about this.

What is the pH of vermiculite? Common gardening literature pegs the pH of vermiculite as neutral but in actual fact it has a pH in the range of 6.0 to 9.5. Vermiculite holds on to minerals better than perlite and these minerals can affect the pH. If the vermiculite manufacturer does not provide the pH it should be checked before it is used.

Vermiculite is good for water retention. For example, Pro-Mix HP has ~35% pelite. It's known for being fast-drying, low-moisture holding. Pro-Mix BX has less perlite, and includes vermiculite.
