In 1876, chrysotile (white asbestos) was discovered in the Thetford Township, in southeastern Quebec.

CHRYSOTILE. Chrysotile's post office was established June 27, 1916 and discontinued July 15, 1933. Asbestos was the mainstay of the Chysotile mine located in Ash Creek. Chysotile is named for the type of asbestos that was mined. In particular, asbestos from Chrysotile was used in the building of Hoover dam in Nevada.

Asbestos deposits are found underground, and the ore is brought to the surface for processing using conventional mining practices. Chrysotile asbestos is usually found near the surface and can be accessed with an open-pit mine. Other asbestos deposits are found at varying depths and may require tunnels as deep as 900 ft (300 m) to gain access.
