West ia Coal Mining – Legends of America
In 1867, 490,000 tons of coal were produced in West ia. The commercial coal industry began to grow with the arrival of the railroads in the coalfields in southern West ia. In 1873, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad wound its way through the New River and Kanawha coalfields that connected Richmond, ia, and Huntington, West ia.
